• Spices
  In the 1940s, while India was still a British colony, tax collectors called sudebars combed the countryside with their soldiers, and often spread terror by demanding more than taxes alone. Spices explores a community's reaction to an oppressed woman's plight, as an impoverished young beauty named Sonbai spurns the sudebar's advances and takes refuge in the pepper factory. Although she has expressed a shared sentiment of resistance, few of the villagers have the courage to defend her, least of all its men, who are blind to injustices against women. Sonbai's eventual victory is over tyranny itself and the subservience that sustains it.
